The Complicated World of Health Insurance Made Simple

I was under my parent's health insurance policy until I was 25, and I visited the same doctors I had been to for my entire life. After I graduated from college and began working as an independent contractor, I realized that I needed to choose my own individual health insurance plan. I was overwhelmed with all of my options and had a tough time choosing the right policy for me. Thankfully, my parents helped me choose a plan that not only offered great coverage, but also allowed me to still visit my favorite doctors that had cared for me for most of my life. I know others out there are likely having a tough time choosing the right health insurance policies for them, and I am eager to share what I learned while choosing my policy with others on my new blog!

3 Reasons To Consider Medicare Supplemental Plans

Medicare is a health insurance plan that covers people over the age of 65, younger people who have disabilities, and those with permanent kidney failure. Medicare is run by the federal government and covers a variety of health expenses. While the coverage offered by Medicare is sufficient for many people's needs, others find that supplemental plan is something they require. Medicare supplemental plans cover what Medicare does not. Here are three reasons to consider enrolling in a supplemental plan.

Medicare Doesn't Cover Everything

The main reason to consider Medicare supplements is the fact that Medicare doesn't cover all health related expenses. Medicare Part A covers hospital visits and hospice care. Medicare Part B is medical insurance that covers medical expenses such as doctor's visits, blood tests, x-rays, and medical supplies. Part A and Part B are often referred to as traditional Medicare. Together, Parts A and B are sufficient for many people. However, they do not cover eye exams, dental care, dentures, long-term care, hearing aids, foot care, and other medical expenses. In these cases, supplemental plans can be a big help.

Travel Abroad With Coverage

Another thing that Medicare doesn't cover is medical expenses overseas. For those who travel abroad frequently, being covered is a must. This is where a Medicare supplemental plan can help. There are plans that will cover up to 80 percent of emergency medical costs while in another country. The ability to travel without fear is one reason to consider adding a supplemental plan. In order to get the best supplemental plan possible, it's also important to enroll during the open enrollment period. This period lasts for 6 months after turning 65. The open enrollment period varies from state to state for those under 65 who are eligible.

There Are Various Plans To Choose From

Another reason to consider a Medicare Supplemental plan is that it offers a variety of options when it comes to health coverage. There are multiple plans to choose from. Finding one that works with your budget, health concerns, and lifestyle is certainly a possibility. Premiums range from $72 to $414 on average. The amount of additional coverage required will vary from person to person. However, a supplemental plan can help ensure that medical care is affordable.

Once someone reaches the age of 65 or has a qualifying illness or disability, they become eligible for Medicare. While Medicare Parts A and B are sufficient for many people, others prefer to also get a Medicare supplemental plan. Medicare doesn't cover everything, so a supplemental plan can help with additional costs. Supplemental plans also offer coverage abroad, making them very attractive to world travelers. There are also various plans to choose from that fit a variety of budgets. Contact a service, like Senior Advisors, for more help.
